The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is a land grant, residential institution founded in 1873 as Branch Normal College. Its doors were first opened to students on September 27, 1875. UAPB is the second oldest public institution in Arkansas and the oldest institution with a black heritage. Since 1873, the institution has grown and changed its official name on two occasions--1927 - Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College (Arkansas AM&N) and 1972 - University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. UAPB's first degree was awarded in 1882. It is the fourth oldest institution in the nation designated in 1890 under the Second Morrill Act.
